One to ten points are awarded in each event to the top ten contestants. First place receives 10 points, second 9, third 8, and so forth down to one point for tenth place. Each weekend is normally a two days of rodeo, but each day of that weekend is considered a separate rodeo for points purposes. In this way, every contestant is given two separate opportunities to earn points each weekend. At State Finals there are also average points given. The top 15 in each event are given one additional opportunity for points (to compete in the short-go round). Points from the, “Short Go,” are added to the contestants standing total with also points for the average and our champions are crowned. The top 4 in each event are eligible to represent the State of Iowa at the National High School Rodeo Finals.

The IHSRA runs for points only. Champions at the end of the year receive awards including saddles, buckles and other sponsor values. The number of awards are determined by the number of contestants in each event. If you have questions regarding how many overall award placings the IHSRA is awarding speak to your student and adult event directors.

Most contestants begin arriving the date before the rodeo (normally Friday evening), but people continue to arrive right up to the check-in. All contestants must have arrived and checked-in with the rodeo secretary by the close of check-in. Emergency number if you are going to be late must be called 641-873-6738. If you do not call this number and arrive late to check-in there is a chance that you will not be allowed to compete.

The times a rodeo will get cancelled because of weather is practically non-existent. If for some reason we do cancel, we will post to Team Reach and our Facebook Group. Raincoats, warm coats, and muddin boots should be packed regardless of the forecast!
